Flower Power: A Time Management Story

Posted on May 27, 2010

I have been wondering how to address the concept of time management without sounding like I am tooting my own horn. I am a mother of 3 kids (5 years, 2.5 years, and 11 weeks), run my own business, and sing lead for a rock band; my house is always spotless, laundry always done, and I cook dinner every night. Those who know me may think I am a master of time management; my husband thinks I overcommit; my mother is pretty sure I do not sleep. I believe that I have simply learned how to squeeze the most out of every second by extreme multi-tasking, but then, some days, my perfectly stacked minute is toppled when - the nanny calls in sick. Then what?

It happens and it happened today. Today, when my husband was traveling and our back up sitter was already committed. So…I did something I never think I have the time or the nature tolerance to do…I planted flowers with my kids. It was hot, buggy, and dirty, but it left a mark of beauty, restored my connection to nature, and got me to experience something new with my kids.

So back to time management….what’s the goal? If you perfectly manage every minute of your life…what have you accomplished? You can use all the tips, feel one step ahead of the rest of the world, but, let’s be honest, that’s only temporary and if you are able to sustain that long-term then I’d call it lonely. In summary, time management is no longer a good thing in my book. Who cares how much I get done in a day if those tasks don’t bring about meaningful outcomes. I want to say I am more of a self-management type but that sounds too “trendy” for me.

Anyway, sleep a little later tomorrow, really listen to what your spouse is talking about over coffee at the breakfast table, and take a walk with a friend at lunch. You’ll feel better for it and “time” lost will be “self” gained.
