Decaf or Discarded?

Posted on June 8, 2010

In the spirit of trust, per my blog post on June 1, I want you all to think about how much you trust your “go to” brands. I got more than the jolt I had expected when I visited Starbucks today for my double tall nonfat skim no whip mocha. I have always been impressed by how well the baristas are able to remember what I say, quickly “telephone” it to the coffee maker du jour, and then hand my perfect cup of joe to me all within a matter of minutes. So impressed that I rarely give a thought to HOW they make my coffee. Today, though, I was forced to think about that. As I waited for my coffee, I watched a barista start to fill the espresso bean container with a bag with what she thought read “decaf” espresso beans but, in fact, the bag was labeled “discard”. Her co-worker caught her in the act but the espresso beans still flowed into the container and coffees continued to be served. Maybe she knew better…but it caused me to think…

Some days, I second guess if I am really getting “decaf” when I clearly order regular or “regular” when I order “decaf”. Never once did I think I may be getting coffee from beans that were, for some reason or another, destined for the trash.

I like trusting my “go to” brands but every once in a while it maybe worth further investigation.
