A Brand New Day

Posted on January 26, 2009

This past Tuesday I was fortunate enough to attend the 44th Presidential Inauguration. On that day and on subsequent days, I have been reminded of the power of leadership.  I will share two quick examples.

First, when was the last time you were surrounded by a crowd - no less a crowd of nearly 2 million people - and not made aware of a single violent act? On Tuesday, 1.8 million people came together in peace. Why? I would say that they were tasked. The people had not simply shown up to watch; they came to act. They were told to be part of the solution and that they would be given tools to become part of the solution. For those of you who have read child development studies that relate to crime or even those of you who have looked at studies about fitness and temptation, you know that in order to keep people or to stay on the right track, you must keep busy. In this case, we are all part of a team - a team with strong leadership, communication, common goals, and a job to do.

Secondly, technology. Regardless of who won the Presidency, it was clear that Obama was - like many of us - a tech addict…blackberry, Facebook, internet. John McCain was not. When you use technology as a tool to get you to the next you to where you want to go, how can you function when those tools are suddenly taken from you? I have attended numerous government conferences where sideline conversations so easily and so frequently end up addressing the poor technological infrastructure of the government. Those of us who have embraced technology know that the benefit significantly outweighs the costs of your tech gadgets and the learning curve. Now, with Obama in the White House and with his contemporary working relationship with Web 2.0 and other technologies, it’s unlikely that the government’s infrasture will remain so outdated.

Why these two examples? When you have masses of people willing to work toward a common goal and when you are willing to make the investment in an infrastructure that in the long-run will pay you back tenfold, there’s little stopping progress. Think about it. Does your organization, campaigns or events have the right leadership and technology in place?
